Thanks to a perfect mix of rain showers and sunshine in April, May flowers are in full bloom throughout the region – and so are the farmers markets! The Susquehanna River Valley is home to many roadside produce stands and farmers markets from May through October, so get out and explore.
Here are three local farmers markets that we suggest:
Lewisburg Farmers Market off of Route 45 on Fairground Road
This year-round indoor/outdoor Farmers Market has been located on Fairground Road, off of Route 45, for decades. Located just 1 mile outside of the downtown, the market is easily accessible by driving or biking, as it’s also located along the newly opened Buffalo Valley Rail Trail.
Open every Wednesday, vendors are typically set-up by 7 a.m. and close up shop by early afternoon. The market features both local and shipped fruits and veggies from organic and conventional farmers alike, as well as cheese, meat, seafood, baked goods, honey, flowers, flea market items and antiques, candy, small retail vendors and local crafters.
Plan to stay for lunch – a very popular lunch stand inside sells hot sausage sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers, and a French fry vendor has been located in the same spot since the market opened.
Sunbury Market House, Market Street
This year-round indoor market is a great find in downtown Sunbury, especially on a rainy day when you’re looking for new places to explore. The market house features fruits and veggies, cheese, meat, baked goods and flowers. Many of the vendors maintain permanent locations in the market, so once you find favorite vendors it’s easy to support them week after week. This is also a nice place to grab a quick breakfast since it includes a small café inside.
The Market House is open Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Selinsgrove Farmers Market, Pine and Market Streets
Open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from mid-May to mid-November, this farmers market is a great example of a community coming together once a week to support local agriculture. This is also a great market to converse with the farmers who grew the produce you’re buying. Many of the vendors offer organic items and produce varies week to week based on what’s in season. The market often offers a wide range of produce, baked goods, free-range eggs, grass-fed beef, pastured chicken and pork, grass-fed milk and cheese along with seasonal produce.
